Vertebral Column, a collection of 33 vertebrae, is the basis of most bodily movements, and so it's prone to a large number of ailments. These rubber-like discs help support body weight, transmit body weight in walking and standing and work as a shock absorber.
There's an increased chance of pain in back and neck due high level of movement, practicing wrong posture and degeneration. 
 

Diseases affecting the back:

-Damages may occur in many parts of the back like the disc, bones, muscles, and nerves.
-Heavy blow or ageing can result in degeneration of the disc, bringing the vertebrae closer. 
-When the disc suffers from oedema, the vertebrae look as if they have moved apart as it widens of the vertebrae. 
-The protrusion of the disc and its sliding can also cause immense pain. 
-The wear and tear of the bones, spondylosis or arthritis of the joints, low density of bones, and tumours are all disorders related to bone. 
-Oedema of the nerves, disintegration covering due to diabetes and waning of nerves due to deficiency of certain vitamins etc, can cause back pain.
 

Prevention of Back Pain:

While standing, sitting, or walking, be sure to practice correct posture. 
Avoid standing or sitting for a stretch of long hours. Make sure you take a break every 2 hours and stretch or move around. 
Make sure you are able to lift the weight before actually lifting it.
Sleep on hard surfaces.
Consuming lots of food rich in calcium, vitamins, and leafy vegetables.
Balanced lifestyle and regular exercise can also prevent back pain.
Avoid weight gain. 
Treatment:
Consult a doctor to know the cause and condition of your vertebrae column.

Massage using a ‘Vata pacifying’ Kuzhambu and steam the area with water boiled with leaves of Avanakku, tamarind, Erukku, and also have a bath in lukewarm water.
Sleep on your abdomen for sometime to relax your back muscles. 

If none of this brings any relief to the pain in two days, or if the pain becomes severe or if you feel shooting pain to the leg, it is better to take the advice of a physician.
