 What Ayurveda says about depression?

Depression is a serious medical condition that negatively affects the way you feel, think and how you act. Fortunately, it is treatable if noticed in proper time. Depression causes feelings of sadness and or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to emotional and physical problems and decreasing a person’s ability to function at work and home. According to WHO, depression is expected to account for more lost years of healthy life than other disease by 2030 except for AIDS. Everyone occasionally feels sad or gloomy.  But these feelings pass within a couple of days.  When a person has a depressive disorder, it interferes his daily life. It leaves pain for the person who is affected and those who care about him.  World Health Organization define depression as a common mental disorder, presented with depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, feeling of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy and power of concentration. Depression cannot just be blown away, it has to get treated.

Ayurveda mentions depression as "Vishada roga. From an Ayurvedic perspective, we are at our core healthy, whole, and happy by nature. It is important, to engage in habits and practices supporting the emergence of our essential nature and bringing balance to mind, body, and spirit. In addition to herbal remedies, drug therapies and Ayurvedic procedures, Ayurveda also supports yoga, breathing techniques, and lifestyle tools to address imbalance. Allergies and the breakdown in metabolic processes can disturb the brain chemistry. This can cause mood swings in a person. Vata imbalance can also cause depression known as “unmadam” in Ayurveda

The Ayurvedic methods of curing depression are Gentle, Natural, and effective. It offers a complete understanding of the nature and causes of depression. Ayurveda offers very effective treatment for depression without negative side effects and the possibility of prevention. It promotes higher levels of psychological health. These remedies not only restore the balance in the body, they also progressively raise the overall level of inner contentment.

The general line of treatment affecting mind are daivavyapashraya chikitsa (spiritual healing),  yuktivyapashraya chikitsa (rationale therapy) and satvavajaya chikitsa( psychotherapy).

Treatments that provide internal cleansing are effective in these cases that includes purification and alleviation. The elimination of vitiated doshas by panchakarma therapies including procedures like virechanam/vamanam is called internal purification. External cleansing treatments includes snehanam(application of oil), swedanam(sudation/steam therapy), lepanam(external application of medicines), parisheka ( sprinkling of medicated water), shirodhaara etc. On the other hand, the allevation treatments include different types of drugs, diet and activities to alleviate vitiated doshas.

Unlike a physical illness, having a psychological illness prevents them from approaching a doctor. But once diagnosed, our science offers enough modalities and care to support them. So, understanding the disease in ayurvedic approach will provide patients with help, hope and feel worth. Positive attitude by holistic approach of Ayurveda aids in uplifting a person's mind.
